|a The purpose of this report is to develop drinking water standards for field-water constituents and properties of military concern that are naturally occurring or anthropogenically introduced under peacetime conditions. The recommended standards are applicable only to military personnel deployed in the field and they are meant to protect against performance-degrading effects resulting from the ingestion of field-water. Standards are recommended that address both short-term (up to 7 d) and long-term (up to 1 y) field-water consumption at rates of 5 and 15 L/d. Turbidity and color are the physical properties of concern because they can adversely impact the organoleptic quality (e.g., taste, odor, or appearance) of field water and thereby lead to reduced water consumption and subsequent involuntary dehydration, which can degrade performance. Total dissolved solids, chloride, magnesium, sulfate, inorganic arsenic, cyanide, the pesticide lindane, and metabolites of aquatic algae and associated bacteria (i.e., geosmin and methylisoborneol) are the chemical constituents of concern because they can be responsible for degrading performance directly as a consequence of their toxic properties and/or indirectly by adversely affecting the organoleptic quality of field water, which can result in reduced water consumption and in increased risk of dehydration.
