Description
Abstract:The present world fertilizer situation has raised many questions regarding future fertilizer supply and demand balances, especially in developing countries. Some Latin American countries have indigenous resources that could be exploited to support a fertilizer industry for the benefit of the country and/or region. Development of these resources is often limited due to shortages of investment capital and lack of trained manpower in project planning, design, and implementation. Another limiting factor in exploiting the resources is that some countries often discourage external capital investment through excessive taxation and the threat of nationalization. However, other countries are very receptive to foreign capital. These nations provide adequate incentives to potential investors and quite often participate as a full partner in building new industry.
This report is an investigation of the fertilizer situation in Latin America with special emphasis on the region's fertilizer supply/demand conditions, raw materials resources, capability of the region to produce N, P2O4, K2O, and the outlook for expansion of the fertilizer industry.
