|a "Oliver Cromwell is one of England's most famous soldiers, yet his military career did not begin until he was 43. Today, Cromwell is often presented as the primary opponent of King Charles I. In fact, as Frank Kitson reveals in this new military biography, Cromwell never commanded an independent army in the English Civil War. However, he was one of the prime movers in creating the New Model Army, a vastly more professional force than the armies first raised by Parliament. In the second Civil War he led a large part of it against a Scottish invasion force and totally defeated it." "Cromwell's enduringly evil reputation in Ireland stems from the storming of Drogheda and Wexford and the ensuing massacres of their garrisons, although it was the Cromwellian Settlement that took place when he was Lord Protector as a result of his campaign that did the damage. But historical truth and Irish legend seldom coincide. The course of Cromwell's campaigns there illustrate another enduring aspect of Irish military history. 'What Cromwell may not have realised was that as fast as he destroyed one Irish army, another would spring up. None of them would be particularly formidable but it would take years rather than months for the country to settle down. In Ireland it always does'. It was to be another Irish garrison that inflicted on Cromwell the one real defeat of his career." "Although the New Model Army was largely disbanded after Cromwell's death and the restoration of King Charles II, some of its regiments survived and Britain has had a permanent, standing army ever since. The British army retained the red coats of the New Model but also its traditions of discipline. In this sense, Kitson argues, Cromwell is truly the father of the British Army."--BOOK JACKET.
