It explores love, class, grief and attitudes to what we eat. Hungry was first performed as a co-production between Paines Plough and Belgrade Theatre Coventry, in Paines Plough's the Roundabout at Belgrade Theatre Coventry, on 30 July 2021, before touring. The play has two interwoven time-frames: 'Now' and 'Then'. In the present, which plays out almost in real time, Bex (early twenties, black) and Lori (early thirties, white) are setting up for a gathering. The scenes set in the past span a couple of years, beginning at the moment they meet for the first time, when Lori is a professional chef and Bex waits on tables to make ends meet. After a coming-together in a walk-in fridge, they embark on a romance. But there are difficulties: Lori has big plans, while Bex is struggling, fighting against a system that is rigged, and grieving for the mother whose food she grew up on. Lori's attempts to educate Bex on her food choices and those of her working-class family end up reinforcing their cultural differences, and as their relationship begins to sour, it seems that some things - such as our relationship with food - go deeper than romance. The premiere production was directed by Katie Posner and designed Lydia Denno. It was performed by Eleanor Sutton and Leah St Luce"--About the play.
