520 | |a Program 4 describes the genre of short documentaries and experimental films from the 20's and 30's which blossomed into the megahit documentary features of the 21st Century. The first section reminds us of blockbusters such as "March of the Penguins," the BBC/Discovery Channel's "Earth", Michael Moore's films, Davis Guggenheim's Oscar winning, "An Inconvenient Truth," and "Waiting for Superman," the documentary about America's educational system. This line is traced from early films using the "fly on the wall" approach, through Ken Burns, to reality shows that are "blockbusters" for television audiences. John Grierson's definition of documentary as "the creative treatment of actuality" underpins further discussions of outstanding producers and innovators within the documentary tradition. Propaganda films such as "Triumph of the Will" are incuded in the definition. Following Robert Flaherty's depiction of exotic cultures and nature, Maya Deren experimented with aesthetic approaches to reality and Stan Brakhage with realistic, experimental films like "Mothlight". Due to technological advances, D.A. Pennebaker was able to film Bob Dylan's 1965 tour of the U.K. and Clinton's successful presidential campaign, as the action took place. Morris' "Gates of Heaven," "Vernon, Florida," and "The Thin Blue Line," came at the truth by filming quirky characters and situations from various points of view. "The Fog of War" demonstrated how our view of historical events can change over time; how filmmakers can uncover the hidden truth behind decisions as complex as those made during the Vietnam War. Ken Burns has found a way to reanimate the past and define the American spirit. His techniques such as motion photography of still photos, the addition of sound effects, and interviews with experts, have set the standard for today's historical documentaries. | ||
