Item Description:Attributed to Thomas Paine in the Dictionary of American biography.
Advertised in the Newport Mercury for April 8, 1776. This consists of the sheets of "Thoughts on the present state of American affairs: extracted from a pamphlet, lately published in Philadelphia, entitled Common sense ..." (31, [1] pages; Alden 641, q.v.) with the title page left blank, preceded by the text of the first half of Common sense supplied in the 16 preliminary pages.
