520 3 |a The Student Dust Counter (SOC) is going to be the first ever student-built interplanetary instrument ft is scheduled to launch in the year 2006 on NASA‘s New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Jupiter Belt, with a gravitational assist at Jupiter. SDC shall also be the first dust detecting instrument to go beyond 18 AU, and shall hence bring in new science from that point forth. The SDC instrument detects dust by using an array of permanently polarized thin film censors made of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). When struck by a dust particle, the material generates a charge proportional to the mass and velocity of the particle. This charge signal is amplified and stored by the front end electronics interfaced to the PVDF: the SDC analog board. The SDC digital board continuously scans all channels on the analog board, listening for a dust particle hit. The nominal frequency of a dust particle impact expected during New Horizon's journey through space is just once a day; The digital system on SDC is also responsible for communicating with the New Horizon‘s spacecraft as well as storing science and housekeeping data. This thesis describes the engineering of the digital system on SDC from the conceptual phase to the implementation and testing phase. An engineering model of the board has already been rigorously tested and has been a part of the first successful end to end test of the SDC instrument this April, 2004.
