Abstract: | Researchers suggest that nonprofit organizations in the United States are becoming more commercial in nature as a result of state restructuring and the retrenchment of social spending. However, the advocacy component of many nonprofit organizations suggests factors aside from market principles influence nonprofit organizations. To explore this problem, I interviewed thirteen community health center leaders in Northeast/Central Colorado. I ask how the actions of providers are shaped by political discourses of deservingness and how processes of state restructuring and the retrenchment of social services affect community health centers. After taking into account these two factors I consider how leaders of community health centers shape the provision of health services. In answering these three questions I show how principles of justice and care remain significant influences for the participants in this research, suggesting that the transition of nonprofit organizations to commercial organizations is not as clear as may seem. |
