|a Focusing on three works which show a very peculiar style, my dissertation offers a detailed and theoretically grounded analysis of the growing consciousness during the Baroque of the contingent nature of dogma, ideology and identity. The articulation of this consciousness, or episteme, in literature from the period presents identity and genre as polymorphous, hybrid, and mutable. I argue that this particularly Baroque episteme represents an epistemological crisis introduced by the new mercantilist modes of production in Early Modern Spain and its overseas colonies. The works that I study present a kind of revolt against the new economic logic and pervading reality. This project not only contributes to the study of Spanish Golden Age literature, but through the implementation of theoretical frameworks from different analytical currents and disciplines, it also adds a more socially and historically contextualized perspective to the field. In a broader sense, my concern is as much with close literary analysis as with how literary discourse intersected with the formation of modern culture.
