Abstract: | Medley is an experimental Western that does not focus on genre-defining gun fights, heroism, or riding off into the sunset; instead this novel fixates on the objects that make up the Old West. Set in Denver a year after the Denver Pacific Railway connected it to the rest of the nation, the city is filled with the ordinary (and not so ordinary) things that both define and populate it: bottles, horse shoes, gun powder, pianos, saddles, whiskey, spoons, cards, petticoats, spectacles, and spurs (to name a few). Here, the characters literally take their cues from the objects that inhabit their world. In each scene the plot is suspended and the reader follows an object from its creation until its path finally crosses with one of the main characters'. Only after the character interacts with the object in some way does the plot progress. |
