These data are collected annually from state education agencies through the U.S. Census Bureau "Survey of Local Government Finances: School Systems." Data in the "School District Finance Survey" include revenues by source, expenditures by function and object, longterm and short-term debt, and student membership for each school district in the United States. These data were collected and edited between March 2002 and March 2003. These data are final. This short report on school district revenues and expenditures is a companion to the state-level Statistics in Brief, Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary Education: School Year 2000?01 (NCES 2003?362), which presents total state and national spending on public elementary and secondary education. Only regular school districts (see 'Definitions') that are on the CCD "Local Education Agency Universe Survey" file and that report student counts were included in this analysis.
