520 |a The number of overweight children and adolescents in the U.S. has reached epidemic proportions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2000, the CDC estimated that 15 percent of the nation's youth were overweight. Overweight children and adolescents are exposed to many health risks, most notably the increased risk for high cholesterol, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes. And over the long run, overweight children have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults and experiencing many other health risks. To address the information gap, the Center for Rural Pennsylvania analyzed weight data covering a three-year period from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The data involved the same groups of students from 151 school districts throughout the state. The analysis showed that in 2001, rural school districts had a higher percentage of overweight students than urban districts and that the problem of overweight rural students was increasing. Between 1999 and 2001, the number of overweight students increased faster in rural schools than in urban schools.
