Summary: | In February 2000, the National Center for Homeless Education convened 25 experts to examine issues pertaining to the transportation of homeless students in a move to ensure their access to education. In a variety of presentations and discussions, participants examined and analyzed the complex issues surrounding transporting homeless students. The meeting addressed the following issues: barriers to transportation for homeless students and why the barriers exist; features of successful approaches to addressing the transportation needs of homeless students; what school districts and communities need to know and be able to do to address these transportation issues and how they can build their capacity to address the issue; how policies and legislation can support school districts and communities in their efforts to provide transportation for homeless children and youth; and what needs to be done. This report discusses what each person can do, and presents issues for further research. Five appendixes include: an issue brief; the 1994 Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act; the federal definition of homeless children and youth and the U.S. Department of Education's 1995 preliminary guidance; the symposium agenda; and the symposium participant list.
