| Summary: | This report shows longitudinal data on minority enrollment at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) and examines trends that may affect minority enrollment in the future. It includes demographic characteristics by race and enrollment characteristics by race. Highlights for fall semester 2000 include: (1) out of a total of 4,470 students, 872 minority students enrolled, surpassing the old record of 810 by 7.7%; (2) a total of 596 African-Americans enrolled, eclipsing the old record of 551 by 13.3%; (3) a total of 276 other-race students enrolled, surpassing the old record of 259 by 6.6%; and (4) slightly more than two-thirds of all minority students attending PVCC were African-American--of the remaining one-third, 117 were Asian, 64 Hispanic, 17 American Indian, and 78 classified themselves as "other." For the most part, minority enrollment trends do not reflect overall enrollment trends. From fall 1996 to fall 1998, overall student enrollment declined while minority enrollment rose; in fall 1998, the reverse occurred; and in fall 1999 and fall 2000, both overall and minority enrollment increased. In terms of age, minority students are similar to white students, though in fall 2000, for the first time, the percentage of minority students between the ages of 22 and 35 exceeded the percentages of white students and other-race students.
