| Summary: | This report, based on the College Board's Annual Survey of Colleges, provides updated information on tuition and other expenses associated with attending public and private nonprofit institutions of postsecondary education in the United States in the 2002-2003 academic year. The annual survey is distributed to more than 2,900 postsecondary institutions across the United States to collect a wealth of data on many aspects of undergraduate education. For the 2002-2003 academic year, the average tuition and fees charged by public four-year colleges and universities is $4,081, up $356 from the 2001-2002 year, for an increase of 9.6%. This continues a trend of rapidly increasing tuition and fees over the last 2 years. Regional differences in tuition and fees were identified. Because increases in room and board rose more slowly than tuition and fees, the total fixed cost of attending four-year colleges rose 7.5% for public institutions and 5.5% for private institutions. About 38% of undergraduates at four-year institutions are at institutions charging less than $4,000 in tuition and fees, and almost 70% face charges of less than $8,000. Only 7% are enrolled in institutions charging $24,000 or more per year. More than half of all students receive some form of financial aid. Figures from this year's survey show, that as in the past, the costs of not attending college are likely to be much greater over a lifetime than the costs of attendance.
