Description
Summary:This report presents the most recent salary and benefits data available for the U.S. child care workforce. Median level child care salaries are compared to the median salaries of other occupations. In addition, data for average wages of preschool teachers and child care workers are presented for each state, with information on wages available by region or county within some states. The report then describes a variety of federal, state, and local compensation initiatives to improve child care workers' salaries or benefits. The report highlights the need for more consistent, reliable, and comprehensive data collection about the child care workforce. Appendix 1 of the report presents compensation and turnover data collected in various states during or after 1998. Appendix 2 contains a resource list of studies conducted prior to 1998 as a record of prior data collection efforts. (KB)
