Description
Summary:This case study describes the use of World Wide Web discussion pages and examines the evaluation of online communication protocols in one graduate class. The study begins by describing the theories and grounding literature that guided the development of the online discussion site. The study also describes the process used to develop the online discussion site as well as the graduate class that would use the site. Next, the study describes the protocol layers needed to effectively use the site, including the technical process of using the site and the communication protocols developed by the instructor. The study then describes modifications made to these protocols based on student feedback to the instructor. Finally, the study describes the protocols that evolved from this process. These protocols included use of a content scaffold, establishment of a conversational objective, establishment of a conversational leader and development of a very specific conversation schedule. The study concludes with a discussion of future research. (Contains 19 references.) (Author/AEF)
