| Summary: | In order to commemorate the 75-year history of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and to engage current and future members in thought about the core values and principles guiding NAEYC's work and that of the National Association for Nursery Education (NANE), this book shares the history of these organizations. The book affirms the fundamental mission to work on behalf of all young children, and encourages a renewed commitment to young children and their families. Part 1, "Understanding Context," lists milestones in early care and education alongside highlights of NAEYC's development and presents the story of the Association's first 50 years. Part 2, "Learning from NAEYC's Past," examines NAEYC's recent history with a focus on the three goals driving the Association's work: building a strong organization, improving early childhood professional practice, and building public understanding and support for high quality programs. Part 3, "Looking Forward," focuses on the future of the Association and its mission, presenting principles for effective organization and offers questions to be addressed in improving work on behalf of all children. Quotations from past and present NAEYC leaders appear throughout the book as well as special features on NANE/NAEYC membership growth, the Association's headquarters, affiliate groups, information exchanges among early childhood professionals, publications, conferences, public education strategies, and advocacy milestones. The book's appendix compiles brief descriptions of the NANE/NAEYC presidents and the terms they served between 1926 and 2001 and a list of the NANE/NAEYC governing board members from the organization's inception.
