Description
Summary:Investigations into children's number learning have been a feature of recent mathematics education research in Australasia. This book is a compilation of the major results of this research with the aim of making them more accessible to researchers, teachers, and others who may be able to use the findings to improve classroom practice. The introduction discusses worldwide trends in research on number learning and the Australasian contribution. The papers are divided into the following sections: The Development of Counting; Numeration and Place Value; Computational Processes and Strategies; and Computation and Number Sense. They vary in their mathematical focus, the age range investigated, the methodology employed, and their conclusions. Some common threads running through all their findings are discussed in the introduction. Contains 38 references. (JRH)
