Description
Summary:This compendium provides standardized data on child care supply and requests for care in California. It provides county and statewide information based on responses from more than 38,000 child care providers and about 45,000 requests for child care, including: (1) key demographic statistics; (2) county population; (3) children in poverty; (4) languages spoken at home; (5) children with working parents; (6) children using care outside the home; (7) minimum wage; (8) average child care costs and percent of minimum wage consumed by child care costs; (9) number of licensed family child care homes and centers, and the number of slots in each; (10) percent of slots in homes and centers that offer full-time and part-time care or care during nontraditional hours; (11) percent of children needing different types of care; and (12) percent of families requesting care in various languages. The publication begins with a summary of statewide findings regarding child care costs and availability. Findings indicate that only 4 percent of child care slots are licensed to serve children under 2 years; only 2 percent of centers offer care during evening, weekend, or overnight hours; 36 percent of child care requests for children under 6 years are for part-time care; and 45 percent of children needing child care referrals were between 2 and 5 years of age, 36 percent were under 2, and 20 percent were school-age.
