| Summary: | Tobacco is routinely used during the school day by many middle school, junior, and senior high school students. Since the cost of tobacco addiction in terms of illness and the drain on school resources are enormous, an in-school cessation program is needed. No other institution in the community is better situated to provide intervention programs to help teenage smokers than is the school, and a number of the advantages of such school programs are offered. The school-day cessation program is explained next. It is built on the notion that teenage smokers spend much of their time in the schools. Steps for implementing the school-day tobacco cessation program include ideas for defining the voluntary program, staffing, identifying students for the program, and the cessation curriculum. Eight sample lessons are offered, beginning with Session One, in which students are made to feel welcome. Some lesson themes include smoking and self-image, the relationship between stress and smoking, learning how to break the power of addiction, and setting goals. Such programs need not be expensive and can draw on personnel already in place. Includes a list of resources. (RJM) |
