Summary: | Parents of multiple birth children frequently wonder whether it is best for their children to be separated or placed together in school. This guide from the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs (NOMTC) asserts that research and expert opinion demonstrate that mandatory separation of multiple birth children is ineffective and can be detrimental to the educational and emotional growth of these children. For this reason, this NOMTC guide strongly recommends that placement of each set of multiples be evaluated on an individual basis. In order to facilitate these decisions, the guide covers the following areas: (1) "Basic Twin Information" (identification of twin type, differences in social relationships, differences in intellectual development); (2) "Mandatory Separation Policy: Differing Opinions" (educators, twins, parents); (3) "'Expert' Views on Separation"; (4) "The Case for Gradual Separation"; (5) "Reasons to Separate"; (6) "Reasons for Not Separating Twins"; (7) "Individuality"; (8) "Retention and/or School Readiness of One Twin"; (9) "Tips for Teachers of Twins"; and (10) "To Separate or Not to Separate: Who Should Decide?" (Contains a list of suggested reading and 27 references.) (EV) |
