Summary: | This reference resource identifies issues concerning technology use in library literacy programs and describes approaches that work at the Brooklyn (New York) Public Library. Section 1 discusses the learning centers at the library, including its mission, philosophy, curriculum, technology, volunteer tutors, and active learning environment. Section 2 addresses the library's response to technology. Section 3 focuses on how to introduce adults to computers: an environment tour, helping learners feel confident, beginning with mouse practice, introducing the word processor, saving and printing, beginning readers and computers, and project-based learning. Chapter 4 deals with word processors, writing, and reading, and suggestions for facilitating learning on a word processor. Section 5 addresses what spreadsheets and databases are, productivity tools and critical thinking, and suggestions for facilitating the use of productivity tools. Section 6 discusses why information literacy is important and suggestions for facilitating learning with CD-ROMs and the Internet. Sections 4-6 conclude with helps for program administrators. Section 7 focuses on using the Internet, including electronic mail and online chats. Section 8 provides 17 lesson plans that contain software and material needs, lesson goals, step by step directions, example of student work, links to books and other resources, and end-of-lesson review. Section 9 lists organizations, conferences, and book and periodical resources and provides a guide for evaluating software. (YLB) |
