Description
Summary:This workshop report examines the educational system in Yugoslavia. The report begins with a general introduction to Yugoslavia, briefly reviewing its history. its natural resources, and its geography. Next, Yugoslavia's educational system is outlined, with brief discussions of its history before and after 1974 and an account of the various languages of instruction. Primary and preprimary education are analyzed next, followed by an explanation of Yugoslavia's secondary education system, including a review of the admission requirements, the academic year, the grading system used, the programs of study, and examinations. Descriptions of the country's tertiary and university education are next provided, with separate outlines of the graduate and undergraduate systems. Following this, selected fields of study in Yugoslavia's higher education system are reviewed, including subject areas within agriculture, business, engineering, health education, law, military education, performing and fine arts, and teacher training. Finally, guidelines for U.S. admissions officers are presented to assist them in placing students from Yugoslavia within their institutions. An appendix presents institutional profiles of 21 institutions of higher education. Contains an index, a glossary of Yugoslavian (Serbo-Croatian and Slovenian) terms, and a 6-item bibliography. (GLR)
