Description
Summary:Brief passages are presented that are appropriate for teachers to use on bulletin boards as introductions to seven American holidays. It is noted that learning about American holidays and celebrations is an excellent way for students, especially in English-as-a-Second-Language classes, to gain a better understanding of American culture. However, bulletin boards that are decorated with pictures of unfamiliar themes (Pilgrims, shamrocks, ets.) without adequate explanations are baffling to immigrant students. The holidays summarized include the following: Columbus Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, and Memorial Day. Each English-language introduction to these holidays is accompanied by versions in five other languages: Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. (LB)
