Summary: | This training manual provides U.S. Probation Officers with a useful guide in understanding the dynamics of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It also gives advice on making this information specific and appropriate to the offenders with whom they work on their caseloads. The manual contains six core training modules that include brief training notes and quizzes. Each module builds a base for the next. Module I involves an overview of HIV/AIDS. Discussion focuses on perceptions, myths, and facts about HIV/AIDS. Module II looks at a major factor for HIV infection: sexually transmitted diseases. Module III examines the connection between drug use and HIV infection. Module IV covers testing issues regarding the HIV antibody test. Module V deals with personalizing risk for HIV/AIDS infection. Officers are asked to look at their personal attitudes and beliefs about HIV disease before passing judgment on individuals with AIDS. This training includes issues regarding gender, sexuality, and safer sex alternatives. Module VI includes discussions about two antidiscrimination laws that protect persons challenged with HIV/AIDS: the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. This module also focuses on disclosure laws and confidentiality issues that pertain to officers' court responsibilities. Special Topics covers additional HIV/AIDS related issues. A quiz answer key for 6 quizzes (one for each Module) and a list of 20 suggested readings are appended. (YLB) |
