A study determined a chronology of events and analyzed the content of United States network television coverage of South Africa from January 1982 through August 1986, to determine the impact of varying degrees of censorship on the amount and kind of reporting coming from South Africa. It was expected that the restrictions would result in less coverage, and specifically in less coverage of violent unrest and of critics of apartheid. The data showed that in the short term, at least, the coverage actually increased during the two states of emergency that included curbs on the media. The curbs also failed to silence critics. In the longer term, however, the coverage has declined, but this may be due to factors other than censorship. (SKC) | ||
