Summary: | This practicum report is a structured account of efforts to improve student test scores and maximize the use of available test data in two rural Florida schools. This practicum was designed to evaluate the meaningfulness and use of Florida's State Student Assessment Test (SSAT) to teachers of second and third grade students. The SSAT is required at grades 3, 5, 8, and 11. The project focused on third grade tests in one large, rural elementary school. Students at this school were achieving 1% to 11% lower on the skills tested on the 1985 SSAT than other third grade students in the district. Comparison of 1984 and 1985 SSAT scores showed decreases in test scores, with the largest occurring in mathematics. Steps taken to improve this situation included inservice teacher training in test interpretation, test administration, and utilization of data. Curriculum guides were revised and new materials adopted. There was a decrease in the number of deficient areas on the SSAT, and scores increased over the previous year. Test data, conference evaluation forms, analysis materials, and instructional materials are included in the report. Over half of this document contains test items to be used for student review and practice. (MDE) |
