Recent research indicates that levels of expertise in sport can be differentiated with cognitive components. This suggests that skilled athletes do not necessarily have superior physiological and biomechanical systems, but have the same type of task-specific semantic network suggested for experts in areas requiring cognitive involvement. This paper will review four cognitive dimensions (recall of schematic information, perceptual detection, anticipatory cues, and decision making) that have consistently differentiated levels of expertise in sport.
