Summary: | The Adolescent-Significant Others' Relationship Questionnaire was administered to 4,822 Malaysian students who ranged in age from 13 to 19 years. Subjects were Form I, III, and V students selected from six states in peninsular Malaysia by cluster sampling. The sample consisted of approximately equal numbers of males and females; urban and rural; and high, average, and low ability students. The sample, which included Malays, Chinese, Indians, and others, reflected the racial composition of the population. Data suggested that Malaysian adolescents tend to view their mothers as loving, caring, and understanding. Fathers are seen as being more knowledgeable in matters of the world. When students were asked to rank the persons they admire and respect most, mothers received the highest rank, fathers the second, and peers the third. These and related findings countered the belief that peers influence adolescents more than parents do. However, findings indicated that as adolescents grow older, they increasingly rely on peers for help in school work, emotional problems, girl-boy problems, sex-related problems, and problems regarding leisure and recreation. Findings reinforced the belief that students' attitudes toward teachers have changed drastically in the last few decades; only 2.6 percent of subjects nominated the teacher as their most admired and respected person.
