These problems are similar to problems experienced adult writers confront in unfamiliar or difficult writing situations. Recognizing that even experienced writers face these difficulties, the basic writing course at Harvard (a second semester "expository writing" course) focused on meaning, fluency, revision, and building confidence. The stigma that was attached to the "basic writing" course was largely removed in the second year of the program when the course was renamed "Introduction to Expository Writing." The new title reflected the idea that the problems of "basic writers" are in fact much the same as problems basic to writing and that writing is always problematic. (RS)
