Description
Summary:The Indiana Council for the Social Studies (ICSS) was founded in 1938 to specifically address the needs of social studies education in the state. The recurring themes addressed by ICSS members include academic freedom, teacher certification requirements, "back to basics," textbook adopting standards, curriculum revision, citizenship, law-related education, and juvenile delinquency. As the ICSS faces the 21st century, these concerns and others such as at-risk students, professional development, and varying emphases on individual aspects of the social studies curriculum must be addressed. The ICSS has impacted the development of the educational system in Indiana through cooperative ventures, publications, and conventions, continually working to promote excellence in social studies education. Included are comments by the past leaders concerning the vital issues of their respective tenures as well as their special memories. These responses present a composite view of the historical concerns of the Council. Biographical data on past presidents is also provided. (PPB)
