520 |a Efforts to renew cultural literacy and reform arts education sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Getty Center for Education in the Arts suggest fundamental changes relating to the scope of art curricula. The single greatest drawback of existing art curricula and the guides that teachers use is the emphasis on skill development at the expense of the art form as a whole. A shift in philosophy and curricular practice for art education would require changes in art teacher training programs so that new art teachers would be prepared to teach the cultural realms in art with the same enthusiasm and skill that they now teach the production of art. The bibliographic annotations which form the core of this study are composed of three parts. Part 1 is a review of the literature concerned with humanities and cultural aspects of education as they relate to curriculum reform and teacher preparation (2 citations). Part 2 reviews the literature pertaining to art education reform movements and their orientations toward changes in curriculum, teacher preparation, and the role of the museum (20 citations). Part 3 is a review of the museum education literature addressing the museum's function and role in various educational relationships (8 citations). The paper's final section offers a summary, conclusions, and recommendations. (PPB)
