The study involved: (1) an informal poll of members of 22 departments concerning the acceptability of holistic evaluation within their department; (2) a faculty survey to ascertain opinions concerning the issues of "writing-to-learn,""learning to write," and faculty collaboration on pedagogical matters; (3) a survey to determine student perceptions of the purpose and means of learning to write, processes of grading, and evaluation; (4) an examination of the impact of holistic evaluation on students' grades and teachers' attitudes toward the evaluation method; and (5) two faculty workshops on holistic evaluation attended by 22 teachers representing 11 disciplines. The grade analysis showed that grades determined through holistic and traditional methods were statistically no different. The faculty survey indicated that respondents in every division saw value in developing and encouraging writing, but were much less in agreement about what was wrong with student writing and the place of writing in the college curriculum. Students seemed confused about the purpose of writing and about writing and evaluation processes. After using holistic evaluation, most teachers were enthusiastic about the process and felt they would use it again. Sample holistic scoring guides and the survey instruments are appended. (AYC) | ||
