Summary: | In 1989, a study was conducted of student athletes at Modesto Junior College (MJC), replicating a similar study conducted in 1988. The study was designed to determine the demographic characteristics, educational backgrounds, goals, academic performance, and educational outcomes of the student athletes. Major findings of the study were as follows: (1) 230 men and 93 women participated on MJC's 19 athletic teams, representing an increase in the number of men (+16) and a decrease in the number of women (-10) from 1987-88; (2) about 23% of the athletes were ethnic minorities (up 3% from 1987-88), and 84% were under 21 years of age; (3) 96% of the athletes had obtained a high school diploma, compared to 86% of the total MJC student body and 92% of the 1987-88 athlete sample; (4) the athletes' placement test results were slightly higher than those of the MJC student body as a whole in both 1987-88 and 1988-89; (5) with respect to educational goals, most athletes were interested in transferring (46%) or were undecided (43%); (6) 12% of the athletes majored in physical education; (7) 70% of the athletes had completed over 25 cumulative units; (8) the athletes had an average cumulative grade point average of 2.7, as did the 1987-88 sample; and (9) during 1988-89, 12 of the 324 athletes received associate degrees and 55 transferred.
