Edu-K is a practical and dynamic method that utilizes simple body movements to integrate the functioning of the brain. It was designed by Dr. Paul Dennison in 1981 by utilizing techniques and information from many different fields, including yoga, acupuncture, growth and development, and brain research. Dennison suggests that when the individual is under stress, the body tends to act from only one hemispheric mode, thus eliminating the proper balance needed for optimal functioning. Edu-K activities, called "Brain Gyms" are used to balance the hemispheres, thereby allowing them to work more efficiently. They reduce the blockages caused by stress and allow the body to function in its optimal state. Recent studies regarding Edu-K have indicated positive shifts in learning and performance in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, balance, and response time as a result of utilizing the "Brain Gym" activities. A number of line drawings, charts, and explanations suitable for making overhead projector transparencies are included. (Author/JD)
