520 | |a The report presents findings of a 1987 survey of 8,062 postsecondary students designed to determine how New York State students and their families finance postsecondary education costs. Among major findings are the following: college costs among full-time undergraduates averaged $6,530; 64% of all undergraduates received some financial aid (compared to 47% nationally); students from middle income families were more likely to borrow than were students from either lower or higher income families; parents covered a large portion of all college expenses; approximately 75% of high school graduates attended a postsecondary institution soon after graduation in the state. An introductory chapter describes the survey and sample. Chapter II looks at the New York postsecondary environment with sections on enrollment patterns, family income, and attendance patterns. Chapter III looks at undergraduate education expenses and concludes that, although college costs rose faster than other costs, few students actually paid the full costs. Chapter IV reviews undergraduate financial aid including the student financial aid sector and financial aid by family income and related student characteristics. The last chapter focuses on how students and families finance college cost, including sections that discuss where the money comes from, family income, gender, race/ethnicity, parental savings, and student employment.
