| 520 | |a In January 1990, a follow-up study was conducted of students who completed or largely completed a career program at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) to determine their educational and employment status and the relationship of their job to their program of study. Telephone interviews were conducted with 215 of 523 former students who had either earned a degree or certificate or left the program with marketable skills. Another 114 former students responded to a mailed questionnaire, bringing the total response rate to 66.1%. Study findings included the following: (1) 87.8% of the respondents had achieved their original educational objective at JCCC; (2) 79.2% were employed in jobs related to their JCCC course of study, and, of these, 88.1% were working full-time; (3) 84.2% of the respondents who were employed in a job related to their JCCC program rated the job as "excellent" or "good"; (4) the average wage reported by program completers employed full-time in a job related to their JCCC career program was $10.36 per hour; and (5) 21.6% of the respondents were pursuing additional education at the time of the survey. Subsequent to the former student survey, another survey was conducted of 200 employers identified by respondents working in jobs related to their JCCC program. Employers were asked to rate the former students' conceptual and technical knowledge, work attitudes, quality of work, communication and interpersonal skills, and overall job preparation, and to provide projections concerning anticipated job openings and wages in the field. Over 90% of the 157 responding employers rated the program completers' job preparation as good or over good, and most gave positive evaluations of other aspects of job performance.
