| Summary: | A maternal death is defined as the death of a woman while she is pregnant or within 42 days of the end of her pregnancy from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes. No one knows exactly how many women die from bearing children because data is imprecise in most countries. However, it is clear that the situation can be improved. This issue of Children in the Tropics provides information to that end. Focusing on childbearing and women's health, the issue offers an overview of maternal mortality from a global perspective, a discussion of the role of the International Children's Center in reducing maternal mortality, causes of maternal mortality, programs for training traditional birth attendants, the antenatal consultation, maternity units at referral centers, and planned parenthood. Five appendices provide information on: (1) infection, asepsis, and hospitalism; (2) AIDS; (3) the process of dating the beginning of pregnancy; (4) physiology of the female sexual cycle; and (5) protocols for anesthesia-resuscitation and the Republic of Burundi's antenatal consultation card.
