The present study examined the incidence of drug use in high schools in 1986 and 1987. The results indicated that, as in the previous study, illicit drug use was common in virtually all high schools. Most seniors (58.7%) attended schools in which 31-50% of their classmates used illicit drugs during the past year; but about 26.3% attended schools with higher rates of illicit drug use (51% or more classmates) and 14.9% attended schools with lower rates (30% or fewer classmates). Some of these differences were related to demographic factors in ways that were addressed in earlier reports; these included regional differences in drug use and the fact that use of illicit drugs is positively related to population density.
