The paper examines the nature of African universities and the historical context in which they have developed including the fervor of nationalism, the efforts of industrialization, and the rising expectations of the continent's people. Next, an outline is provided of the obstacles facing these institutions. Among the obstacles discussed are: (1) the volatile political situation on the continent; (2) the global negative impact from nations of the North; and (3) the underfunding of the universities. Finally, the paper highlights what are considered the main challenges and the prospects that are offered in trying to meet these challenges. Contains 4 references. (GLR)
