| Summary: | Guidelines are presented for implementing field placements in social gerontology courses. After an introduction comparing the focus, objectives, and content of two types of experience--the liberal arts field placement and the human services internship--the paper is divided into three sections. These outline recommendations for the organization, execution, and evaluation of field placements. In section 1, procedures for organizing successful placements are suggested. Discussion centers on identifying and securing field sites, establishing good communications with the field site organizations, and preparing students to operate comfortably and responsibly in the field setting. The opportunities to link theory with practical concerns in this preliminary student training are emphasized, and possible training activities are provided. Section 2 addresses the task of executing the field placement. The needs to define clearly the assignment requirements and to match carefully the student and field agency are cited as primary considerations. The recording of student experiences is seen as a fundamental part of the assignment, and various methods for accomplishing this are assessed. Three methods of evaluating the field placement, outlined in the final section, are routine teacher grading based on the quality of written requirements, discussion of student reactions, and solicitation of the opinion of participating community organizations. The latter two are offered as ways to improve subsequent experiences. Appendices include a form letter of inquiry for field placement, an outline of expectations for internship students, a listing of field placement opportunities, student and field organization evaluation forms, and an abridged syllabus.
