Summary: | Following a statement of the problem of putting aging education in the elementary secondary curriculum, and a review of the relevant literature, a model for developing a curriculum on aging is presented. An overview of the 3-year project, developed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana schools for grades K-12, is offered, including activities and yearly objectives. The content of the project is presented, with detailed information on specific program techniques and methodologies, e.g., curriculum manuals for grades K-5 and grades 6-12, use of a cadre of trained teachers, the resource center, and a slide/tape presentation. Unique aspects of the project are described, including the phased approach and a design using teachers as trainers. The evaluation design, delineated by objectives, is given along with activities to meet each objective. The project description concludes with a statement on multiyear goals. Extensive appendices include results from the 1980 survey of Louisiana students' attitudes toward older people, materials from the 1978 Baton Rouge Youth Conference with Older Americans, a listing of curriculum resources on aging (books, periodicals, films, and photographic aids) by grade level, a listing of organizations concerned with aging, a list of the members of Project and Advisory Council for the Youth and Aging Curriculum Development Project, and a brief description of the aging curriculum.
