Summary: | A 4-day simulation activity encourages high school students to confront issues of law and journalism through exploration of seven legal issues: prior restraint, access to courts, rights of reply, libel, privacy, confidential sources, and use of stolen documents. The kit contains all materials needed for the simulation, including a director's manual, student guide, legal code, player identification cards, and simulation instructions. The director's guide presents an overview of the game, preparation directions, instructions for play, post-game discussion questions, and additional readings. The student guide introduces players to the game and provides background readings on freedom of the press, First Amendment protection, the purpose of the First Amendment, modern problems of law and media, and sample dilemmas. The legal code contains cases and information about the seven legal issues stated above. The instruction set consists of one-page directions for each simulation player, including three reporters, an editor, a newspaper lawyer, a prosecutor, a secretary, a criminal defense lawyer, and a congressman.
