| Summary: | This critical review and evaluation of the literature covers the field of computer assisted instruction (CAI) and reading from its inception to the present day. Seventeen research studies are discussed as well as four surveys of previous research in this field. Major issues addressed include the effectiveness of CAI and computer managed instruction as teaching tools; the effectiveness of different CAI modes; the effectiveness of CAI with respect to grade, age, and ability levels; rate of learning or time saved in learning with CAI; the retention of learning once CAI has taken place; and overall student and teacher attitudes towards learning reading skills with the aid of a computer. An appendix includes a coding sheet for the studies reviewed and a chart summarizing the research studies, presenting the reference for each study, date, research design, and methodology (especially the CAI mode and the hardware and software used).
