Description
Summary:Trends between 1975 and 1983 in the number of full-time instructional faculty at Maryland public colleges and universities are reported, along with the number and proportion of part-time faculty, the percentage of tenured full-time faculty, and the distribution of full-time faculty by academic rank. Also examined are the ages of full-time faculty on the basis of their tenure status and the distribution of full-time and tenured faculty by program. A statistical profile of instructional faculty in fall 1983 is provided in terms of employment status: full-time tenured faculty, full-time faculty on tenure track, full-time faculty who are neither tenured nor on tenure track (full-time temporaries), and part-time faculty. The classification of part-time status was determined by each institution. Patterns in faculty characteristics/employment status are also examined for the state as a whole, for different types of college (two- and four-years), and for specific institutions. Findings include the following: 57 percent of the instructional faculty in state institutions were either part-timers or full-timers not eligible for tenure; 34 percent of the full-time temporaries and 21 percent of the part-timers had at least 4 years of service at the same institution.
