| Summary: | Student activities, teacher background information, and lesson ideas for teaching about law in social studies classrooms are presented. The first section provides students with a worksheet for determining the dates and historical significance of 15 great events (or documents) in U.S. history. A teacher resource list matches each event to pages in three popular textbooks (published respectively by Ginn, Harcourt, and Prentice-Hall). Next, teachers are presented with ideas for using landmark cases to teach about events in history, followed by tips for conducting mock trials. Activities center around five famous trials in U.S. history: "The Case of William Wemms, et al.,""People of Washington, D.C. versus Daniel Sickles,""People of Massachusetts versus Lizzie Borden,""People versus Harry Kendall Thaw," and the "Case of 'Shoeless' Jackson, et al." A case study is then provided to show students the treatment that juvenile delinquents received in the past. A section providing teachers with an idea for using collages to report case studies is followed by word games and a list of legal terminology. Each lesson includes teaching procedures and reproducible student handouts. (LH) |
