520 |a Survey data based on a random sample of retirement villages' residents in Florida (N=519) considered retirement plans. Individuals were more likely to have made detailed plans for: Health Insurance (85 percent); Income (71 percent); Will (70 percent); Housing (67 percent); Health Care (55 percent); Leisure Pursuits (39 percent). A retirement planning scale was constructed from the data. A quarter of the sample could be considered detailed planners. About a third were considered good planners; another 20 percent made some plans; and a final 20 percent did little planning with perhaps only planning for one or two items such as Income or Health Insurance. No correlates between the scale and basic sociodemographic variables were found. Nor were retirement planners any more likely to have family support or plan for support. No difference was found between planners and non-planners in the number of family members in the area or plans to move closer to family as they age. Those who did engage in a higher degree of retirement planning rated themselves in better health and reported using less health care. Finally, planners in general indicated they were in a better financial position: their retirement income was more comfortable; the income had not eroded since retirement; and they were less likely to use their assets than those who did less planning.
