520 |a A study was conducted to examine the persistence patterns of Mercer County Community College's (MCCC's) student enrollment for 1980 through 1985. Both full- and part-time entrants were tracked over six consecutive semesters to assess non-return rates, student movement across programs, and graduation rates. Study findings included the following: (1) the proportion of fall semester full-timers returning to either full- or part-time status the following spring increased from 81% to 84%; (2) part-time persistence remained relatively stable across all the semesters despite a sharp decline in the part-time enrollment; (3) the percentage of part-time students switching to full-time status after one semester increased from 4% to 6% between fall 1980 and fall 1984; (4) transfer and career programs experienced net gains due to changes in student majors, while the non-degree and preparatory programs had net losses; (5) graduation rates were highest among full-time entrants after four semesters and, in general, rates were higher for fall entrants than for spring entrants; and (6) trends showed more students combining work and school, and taking longer than the traditional 2 years to complete their degrees. Appendices include data on full-time and part-time persistence output. (Author/EJV)
