520 |a A survey of former students of the Wisconsin Vocational, Technical, and Adult Education (VTAE) wood technics programs and employers in woodworking industries was conducted during spring of 1985. General objectives were to determine job classifications, types of businesses, and relative importance of tasks or duties in various woodworking-related occupations, and to seek information on future trends and suggestions for improving training in the program. A total of 77 questionnaires from former students and 57 from employers were processed for this study. Some of the findings were as follows: (1) former students were employed in a broad array of 14 occupations, with a noticeable decrease in unemployment and an increase in self-employment; (2) nearly half of the former students were employed in residential construction and/or contracting, while a fifth of the employers were in this type of business; (3) all woodworking occupational categories listed in the questionnaire were represented in the ranking of the 29 tasks rated most important by former students and employers; (4) training subjects receiving the highest ratings by both former students and employers included safety, blueprint reading, use and care of tools and machines, problem solving, wood and lumber materials, and communications; (5) respondents indicated that VTAE schools could help them by offering update seminars or courses on new materials and applications and new technology; and (6) the majority of former students rated the wood technics program as very good or excellent. Recommendations for course modifications and updatings were to be made from the results of the study. (KC)
